.::: Street Festival @ Church & Ryneveld Street :::. Tuesday, September 30, 2008

Few days before the weekend, all the lamp posts are covered with this :

"What the ? " I heard you say :)
The translated version :

Just by these two flyers, we can already learn some Afrikaan words.

Straat = Street
Kerk = Churcho
Kinder = Children
Musikante = Musician
Hartjie = Heart

Yes, a mini Street Festival over the weekend at Church Street, which is about 3-5mins walk away from my house.
So on Saturday, woke up early as usual just so i can go kai kai...

The streets near the festival is closed for vehicles.
You can see stalls lining the street, just like our pasar pagi in Malaysia.
Cleaner version of course, and cooler weather.

There are stalls selling flowers and plants, and pots of cute cute plants like Blueberry , etc.

Also stalls selling ceramic items

Stalls selling kiddy items

They even have fun things for kids such as face painting, sand art and henna tatooing.
R10 for face painting, so fun , right? Next time i got a kid i will take him/her for face painting. haha...
This little boy transforming into Spiderman.

Cute Peter Parker in the making..

This stall is a animal charity stall, selling all kinds of stuff. I bought two items from there.

Some shops take this opportunity to open a stall right in front of their shops to attract customers.

This stall below selling items which are handmade by blind women.

Food stalls - pies, sandwiches, meat..
This stall's burger is thick and HUGE!!

Cute Door-stopper...

A few ppl bring their dog along too....a small silky terrier, a poodle and this big huge dog. Very very obedient though, he follows his master without a leash!

There are also talented street musicians in the street, making the street fun and lively.

Lastly, the two items that i bought from the Animal Charity Stall :

Two small glasses , bigger than a shot glass, smaller than a normal glass. Still considered a shot glass i guess. The insides got a bit of crack, but cannot see from the outside. Can just keep and display? Haha.... Saw this and thought of you la Yin, this is just an extra for you. Two for only R4.

And saw a small little display dog, holding the label 'Welcome'. Thought of Mum with her collection of dogs at home, of course. R5 for this doggy.

Missing all of you at home.

.::: A cloudy day :::. Friday, September 26, 2008

In Malaysia, when you say "Today is a cloudy day."
What comes to your mind?
I think it will mean... dark, gloomy skies... wanting to rain, but not raining.

But in South Africa, when you say "Today is a cloudy day."
It is really a cloudy day.
Bright blue skies, but with clouds.

This is what we call a cloudy day in South Africa.

I thought i also see such nice skies in Penang, when there is no haze !!!
We really hv it, especially in the early morning after a night of rain :-)

Noticed the trees are having lots of leaves now as compared to those trees that Wen shown us when she first arrived.

Love you,

By Anonymous Mummy, at September 27, 2008 12:35 AM

maybe the so-called cloudy skies in sa is clear compared to Msia cuz of thearea of vacant land in sa. the safari, i think!!!!

.::: Heritage Day @ My first public holiday in Stellenbosch :::. Wednesday, September 24, 2008

Today's Heritage Day in Stellenbosch.
South Africans celebrate Heritage Day by remembering the cultural heritage of the many cultures that make up the population of South Africa.

Wow! A public holiday at last!! No work on a weekday !! =)
Jealous ? Neh neh ni bu bu... haha
One thing good in Malaysia is that we are so multi-racial and have to take care of all the races' feelings, so we get to have many public holidays each year.

I woke up at 5am today, these few days keep waking up at odd hours.
Keep worrying about my ATM card - geram they cannot send a new one to me.
But it's all good now, my heroes (mum and dad) helped me to settle it, will blog about this in a later post.

These few days very good mood to pamper myself, because i have all the time especially at night before i sleep !
After soaking myself on a warm warm bath, i will put the Body Shops Papaya Body Butter all over my body.

Nah, i didn't buy it from here, i bought it back in KL.
But this is the first time i use the body butter from Body Shop. Papaya flavour is very nice, not like the papayas we eat. It is also not too strong as strawberry, which can be too sweet after smelling it for a long time, but just nice and not sticky at all.
After waking up in the morning, i can feel .. wahh.. skin smooth smooth, nice feeling!

Last weekend the weather was so good, about 20 celcius during the daytime. My mind was thinking... Springtime finally!
But yesterday and today, it's freezing cold again at 11-13 celcius =.=
And according to Accuweather, at night it is at 8 celcius!! But i don't go out at night wan, so nvm..

Remember the mountain in front of my door? Today it was near blocked with the mist/ cloud.

Before :

Now :

But still, i went out today. My skin must be adjusting to the weather become thicker, because the coldness seem much better now somehow. Or maybe i am fatter now, more fats to protect me from the cold =)

Today i walked straight to Merriman Street to find the video shops. Apparently there are 2-3 of them. That day i only went in one of the shops, but the movies there are quite old. Like for Heroes series, they only have Season 1. But today, i found this big video shop , Vee's Video.
The DVDs in that shop are quite latest and have more series' latest seasons.
I rented Prison Break Season 2. Come to think of it, i should have rented Smallville first instead of Prison Break. The rental is for R10 (RM 4.50) per DVD. In Penang already can buy one DVD with that amount lor :(

I talked with the salesgirl of the videoshop a while, asking her about the safety around that area, as it is further than my usual walks. She assured me that it is safe in the daytime, but the evenings better to be accompanied by a male friend. I guess that is the same for everywhere, even in KL. Never too safe for a girl to walk alone in the nighttime.

After that i met up with a tour agent at Mugg & Beans regarding the cost of my planned daytrips with some colleagues to Cape Peninsular, Cape Point and also the Hermanus area.
The price he quoted was reasonable, but that was to decide later this week. I had my usual hot chocolate there and was about to order some food when i thought of a Thai Restaurant introduced to me by Sara.

I walked along Dorp Street until i reached the Thai Restaurant, Simply Asia.

Inside Simply Asia:

From inside (unable to sit outside, too cold!

The Menu food names are all in Thai, with the explanation of each food in English.
They also serve wine and beer - but i did not order.

I ordered the Green Curry Chicken with Rice (forgot what is it called in Thai) and a glass of plain water. The waitress asked if i would like my curry to be mild, medium or very spicy. I chose VERY spicy , hehe. Been craving for spicy food!

My plain water. Restaurant must got class a bit - add one slice of lemon for plain water to zzzng it!

Green curry chicken with rice... Look at what is on top of my rice!

A carrot butterfly!

The food was good, i like it a lot. And the curry turns out to be very spicy also, haha! But the spicy taste made me miss home, miss my usual tom yams with Jen.
The portion is big, it's really worth it. I think i will go eat again soon !
The bill turns out to be R49 (RM 22) , with the plain water foc, the price ok ma hor?

Just two doors away, is a very cute shop, Cupcake.

I can just bet that every girl will love this shop!
They sell .. cupcakes of course. And also handmade cookies, jam, marshmellows, soup, etc.
And everything is handpacked beautifully with taste. Very creative and artistic =)

Cupcakes , cupcakes and cupcakes...

Jars and jars of syrup, marshmellows, beautifully packed.

They even set out chairs for people who wants to dine in. There are a lot of parents who bring their kids over and they love all the beautiful cupcakes.

I continued my walk back home. On the way, i took the picture of Oom Samie Se Winkel.

Oom Samie se winkel - (Uncle Sammies shop) has remained the same since it was first opened over 150 years ago. As you duck through the low doorways you step back in time to a period in the past. The rooms of this frontier era general dealer are packed full of a wide variety of goods for sale, these range from tools and antiques to wine, clothing and food, a glimpse into the days when these shops had to provide all the requirements of their small communities.

But i didn't go in the shop... cos too pricey. R300 for the visit. I'm too stingy for it . haha...
Might be worth it going in, i don't know, but i am not willing to part with the money for this just yet.

Next to the shop is Melissa's The Food Shop.

It sells food products from home made ice cream, yoghurts, chocolates to cakes, buns, tarts.
I am not sure if it is all self-made, but it has a very personal touch / packaging to it.

And then i met this weird old guy who tells me he ran 21 km since morning to Stellenbosch. I 'yeng chau' him and say "Ooh, that's far! You are very healthy," and he said "Yeah yeah i am."
The fact is he did not realise i saw him parking his car just around the corner. Blek!

I went to checkers and bought lasagna to cook, chocolate (Crispy Mint again), spaghetti sauce and.. Cleo Magazine! haha..
But damn, it's so expensive over here. In Malaysia, for a thick book of it only costs me RM5.40.
Over here it's wait, lemme go check... R24.95 (RM11). But i still bought it anyway, lol.

The more expensive and thinner Cleo :

I also found a small second-hand bookstore (Not as big as the one in Chowrasta Market, Penang). I bought a book of Sidney Sheldon - A Stranger in the Mirror.
I have read it before back in Malaysia, but i can read books again and again, just as i can watch a nice movie again and again :)
The book costs me only R6 which is less than RM3 ! :o
Shiok!! Mum, remind me to bring you here if you are coming :)

As Stellenbosch is a wineland itself, the wines here are sold very cheap. And there are a lot a lot of choices to choose from. I am not a wine lover, too bad.
Even at Checkers, the choice is endless.

Eeep... been so long since i drink Henessey. How much is Henessey over there? Just wonder if the price differ much.

Oh ya, i forgot to tell that you will have to pay your own plastic bags at the cashier. Either you bring your own or they charge you for the plastic bags to put the items you bought.
From Checkers, i decided to go back home using the Church Street and Drostdy Street.
The shops there are at the higher end, so the people who hang around are the richer people, so somehow it gives a much safer feeling.

Just some random pics of shops on my way back home :

A group of performers dancing and singing - to entertain the bus of tourists i think.

Reached home at 2pm + ... aah, cold but nice day . And look at the cupcakes i bought! Yay!

.::: Fire @ Nu Bar :::. Tuesday, September 23, 2008

On the way back from work, fire engines were passing by me, sirens screaming out loud.
Then i saw smoke coming out from Nu Bar - one of the bars where young people flock to during the weekends.

Saw some people snapping photos, i also go near and snap! haha... although i don't see any fire, but a lot of smoke coming out from the door and windows.

Hey, even the fire engines in Stellenbosch is so clean!

There was this colleague Sharon, who went to Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur before, and she told me that there is always a cloud of haze hanging around the city.
Now that i see Stellenbosch, i realise why they think that way. You can really see big large space of sky above you. Nothing dirty in between, just the clear blue sky hih above, shaping like a globe.
If you don't know what i'm talking about, come here ! hehe , because i also dunno how to explain =.=

At night after the hot fire day, me and Rianna went to the petrol kiosk and bought Magnum Mint! Yum yum, faster go and get one, must try!

.::: Lovely Day (Before it turns bad) :::. Sunday, September 21, 2008

Good! A lovely day on a Saturday again.
I even set my alarm clock early at 8am, didn't want to wake up late when all the shops are ready to close for the day.
Early morning very 'guai' already.... washed my clothes, hung the clothes, bathed, and took my garbage bag out
Ahh, beautiful day, there i was, ready to explore more with my wonderful companion - my two legs.

I went into Drostdy Street, Church Street and Bird Street. The shops there are more expensive and higher end - cater to the whites.

The rows of shops

Saw this interesting building, the picture at the top of the building hints it's a church i think - i do not know how to read the Afrikaan-language sign.

The Flower Cottage :

Some shops that sell cute souvenirs, on the tag price is R20 for each, but when i was on the way out from the shop, the shopboy told me he can sell to me 3 for R20. =.= I didn't get any anyway. Too early or souvenirs, i want to see everything before i decide.

Some cute penguin souvenirs - took from outside the shop.

I went to Mugg & Beans to have my brunch. This is also a place where all whites flock to, so i think the price must be on the higher side. I ordered french toast and a cup of hot chocolate.
It was really lovely, and big in portion too!

My order of french toast came with two french toast , honey and also some ham and a slice of lemon!

Yum yum yum, gone very fast.

They also brought me a whole lot of sauces , tomato, tobasco, bla bla don't know what else. I didn't use any, honey is enough for me =)

My hot cup of hot chocolate. Yummy yummmy!!! Especially in the cold weather when my hands are freezing... hot chocolate in your tummy just gives u the happy and contented feeling.

My meal costs me R40, which is about RM18. A bit expensive yea, but i feel that it is worth every penny of it. Indulge myself in expensive treat few times a week makes me happy Hehe... and the french toast is just right. Heavenly! Thumbs up x 3

These few days in Stellenbosch i also met many owners taking their pet dogs for walks. On Friday i met a lady with two dogs ; a maltese-poodle, and another autralian silky terrier mixed.

Then today i met with this guy, with two Afgan female dogs. Afgan dogs look a bit weird to me. Like Huey said, they have rebonded hair. haha... But they are really special and the dogs have shiny and healthy groomed hair.

Even saw this guy taking his beagle out shopping in the shop. I wish i can bring Rainbow in to shops like that in Malaysia.

Really miss my Rainbow. Although i know she will be in good hands with Jen, i still worry and keep asking Jen the same question over and over again. Eat already? Her skin still itchy? Remember to play with her. Remember to set alarm clock to walk her ar... hehe...

Rainbow, cute since the first day...
This pic of Rainbow on the first day, joining us in our family, taking her first steps at home.

And now Rainbow - 3 years of age, but still lovely and cute and stubborn lol

My Maybank ATM card got retained by the ABSA Atm machine... how? :(
Will the ABSA bank shred my card? I can't possibly make another Maybank ATM and this is the only way i can withdraw money!
Had a nice morning but somehow this destroyed it .
Don't feel like blogging for this weekend.

I called up Maybank to deactivate my card for the time being...
Stupid ABSA bank is only open until 11am on Saturday, and closed on Sunday.
Even the Call centre is only open Mon-Fri from 8-5. Imagine that!
Can't do anything now.... ahhhhhh.....

Somehow this incident made me realise how alone am i.

.::: Roman's Pizza :::. Friday, September 19, 2008

Every night got to think what to cook / buy to eat for dinner.
Not that i have much choice either, the type of food that i know how to cook, i cannot get the groceries / sauces from here!
Eg, so many dishes i know how to cook with Oyster Sauce, but there is no such thing here! And imagine me (the kiam po) have not have a taste of soya sauce since coming to Stellenbosch!
What they have is sugar / salt / olive oil . Their spices all are tasteless ... looks like pepper to me.

So yesterday i got lazy and decided to eat Maggi Mee + egg. Here, my microwave is my second best friend. I use it to cook Maggi Mee too, hehe. While the mee is in the microwave, my doorbell rang.

Shit, i'm not wearing a bra and i have my Tom and Jerry with a little holes on it. (Shut up, it's very comfy and i like to wear it to sleep!). I quickly rushed to the room and wear my black jacket over.

Opened the door, and ooh, it's my neighbour Rianna (Not sure if i spelled it correctly). She was thinking of a pizza and there is this promotion at Roman's Pizza - buy two for the price of one!
Hmm.. pizza... but my noodles how?? I told her, Ok ok! I will eat both! :D
So she called Roman's Pizza and ordered two small pizzas - Bacon Supreme for her and BBQ Chicken & Mushroom for me.

We quickly get something warmer and got into her car and drove to the pizza place which is less than 5 mins away to get our pizzas. No free delivery :(
Come to think of it, this is my first time i am out of the house at night. Have to get some colleagues or trustable friends to take me out at night.

Our Roman's pizza! (Sorry, i don't know why the picture still turns up vertically although I already turned it anti-clockwise)

My hot hot yummy yummy cheap cheap BBQ Chicken & Mushroom Pizza...

It costs us only R40.90 for two pizzas, meaning R20.45 each! (around RM 9 ! )

.::: Contributing back to Society :::. Thursday, September 18, 2008

Today is Social Responsibility Day, which is celebrated by my company, globally.
On this day, around the world, we try to do our part and contribute to the society.

We were told to meet at the reception at 9am where the bus will leave at 9.15am sharp.
Imagine that this is the first time for me to be out from Stellenbosch!

In the bus..

The highway ..

Acres of land by the highway.. Most of them are wineyards...

Saw this cute little garden centre..

We reached the place 20mins later. The place is actually a home for the poor people, prepared by a Community Service Society.
Our job there today is to paint the fences, planting of seeds/vege and also making scarecrows for the home.

Once there, we quickly divided ourselves into three groups. I chose to be either in the painting group or the scarecrow group, but i would prefer not to be in the planting group! I'm not much of a gardening person, do not like soils in my fingernails and don't like to step on mud..

My hand wearing the disposable gloves..

The scarecrow frames, ready to 'become a real boy'.

A few colleagues trying to figure out which paint is the anti-rust paint and which is the normal paint.

Group 1 task : draw the lines, make holes for the plant, and plant seeds/veges on the beds.

Group 2 task : scrubs away the old paint, paints the anti-rust layer of paint, then the silver finish paint.

Group 3 task : stuffs items into scarecrow, making them wear funky clothes and trying to make it as real looking as possible .. Colleague stitching on the mouth for the scarecrow..

We finished part of it by 12pm, and let the second batch of colleagues who came for the afternoon session to complete the job.
The results were pretty amazing, everyone did their part and it completed sooner than we expected.

By 2pm, three scarecrows happily scaring away unwanted visitors from the soil bed.

Even have the fat lady version ..

The fence poles shining brightly in silver, and the people from the home will be happy to see their garden so green!

We then spend the next hour just talking and laughing with other colleagues..

See this fluffy 'phong phong' caterpillar who came to visit us..

It was a very well-planned event - preparations of tents and items (from paints to buckets and brushes, stuffings for scarecrows, seeds, etc) Each of us also were given a lunchbag (with a junk food, a burger and yoghurt bar). On the table under the tent, there were plenty of sandwiches, fruits, drinks (Coke, fruit juice, coffee, tea), and they even managed to rent the movable toilet..

As most such toilets in Malaysia is very smelly and dirty, i tried my best to 'tahan' not to go to the toilet as long as possible...
But at last cannot stand already, have to go also.. >.<

Pleasant surprise!
The toilet is so so so clean! Smells nice too.. haha
And even got radio/music in the toilet..

Sorry, cannot record the music for you all to listen to.. haha

The bus came back at 3pm to fetch us all back to the office.
I had a really good time, mostly because i get to meet a few more extra people that i don't already know and also it was a good time to just gather and talk with them.

I'm actually loving this place, but i want to go to more places outside of Stellenbosch that i heard so much of but i just don't know how to travel alone!!
Now i just need to find another non-South African who would like to explore as much as I do.
(I've asked around, so far it's only me and another girl who is here for 6 months already and has been to everywhere) =.=

.::: Prepaids :::. Tuesday, September 16, 2008

Now, i know of prepaid phone, prepaid internet, but here i even have prepaid ELECTRICITY!!
Yes, you heard it right.
From what i heard, the reason for them having this prepaid system is because many people in South Africa spend more than what they have. So prepaid basically allows them to only use what they have.

I have this meter in my house, where it displays the electricity units available. It is hidden in a wooden cabinet.

At first, i was being told that I will have to pay for the electricity myself. My mind was thinking "Wah.. should i save money and switch off the lights at night? But i'm scared wor.... "
Luckily, i asked my Line Manager and he agreed that the company will pay for it together with the rent.
Still, i will have to check it every now and then and reload it, then only claim it back from company. Kam Muan!

The first time i recharged it, i only bought 100 rand which lasted me for about 1 week +. This time i bought 400 rand which gives me 675.20 units, so i wont have to check it every now and then., hopefully for a month or so.
Every meter box will have a number which i will have to give the shop that i buy the prepaid from. She will then key in my number and then give me a receipt with a 12-digit code.

I will then ;

Steps :
1) Press Clr
2) Type in 12-digit-code

TA DA!!

I have 43. 60 + 675.20 = 718.80 units!

Curiosity got the better of me, which prompted me to google... Is it true that Kentucky Fried Chicken renamed to KFC because they do not use chicken, but using genetically manipulated organisms which has no beak, no feet and no feathers to increase their profit?

http://www.truthorfiction.com/rumors/k/kfcgeneticchickens.htm
http://www.snopes.com/horrors/food/kfc.asp

Backed up by researches.
Phew, i'm happy it is not true.

I love Hot & Spicy! Mmm.. It's finger lickin' good !

.::: Clothings from Edgars @ Stellenbosch :::. Sunday, September 14, 2008

The weather is always unpredictable in Stellenbosch , or maybe in South Africa.
Yesterday the sun was shining so brightly, and today it rained so heavily.
Although it's Sunday, i set my alarm at 8.00am. Knowing myself, i will lie down in bed at least until 8.30am, haha.

The reason i want to wake up early is to go and have a walk around as the shops here either do not open on Sundays, or only open until 1pm latest. Really miss Malaysia where we can wake up at 1pm and then go shopping until 8pm on Sundays.

I know that the wind was blowing quite strong last night, as i can hear the sound Wooo wooo from my bedroom. Even worse, the my bedroom's ceiling light suddenly started blinking and then went off. I was so scared that there is a power outage to the whole town of Stellenbosch. Yes, according to my friend who was here, he encountered almost 2 weeks of power outage in Stellenbosch, holding on to his torchlight. Imagine that! I will be so scared at night. I quickly opened my bedroom door, and phew... i can still see (meaning the lights are on lah!). I guess these few nights i have to make do with the bedroom lamp beside my bed, until the landlady fix it on Tuesday. She always have someone to clean up the house for me on every Tuesdays and also change the towels / mats / bedsheets.

It is quite cold today because of the strong wind, and still drizzling when i stepped out of the house. I saw some very cheap clothes yesterday in a warehouse shop, but did not try it on because i was holding on to a lot of plastic bags. So, i headed straight to the shop and tried on a few. There was one brown top which i like, but unfortunately, the size is a bit bigger than what i would like it to be.

I then walked to Shoprite (as it was nearer to the shop than Checkers) and bought a box of lasagna. I just have to go back and pop the box into the oven and i will have a yummy lunch!
Fattening too, though. Don't worry, Mum! I hear you! I won't become Tua Pui after 6 months, hehe. I wanted to buy a youghurt shake again but.... the *good brain* speaks to the *bad brain*, "Oi.. don't spend so much lah, everyday yoghurt shake !" . And the *good brain* wins. But i am still thinking of it until now. haha..
Oh yah, their store has a lot of variety for the dog section, compared to the ones in Malaysia.

The whole section of dog food selection (even the ones on the left to the pillar) , excluding the toys and accessories.

I took this picture of the Dutch Reformed Church in Dorp Street.

There were lots of times when i heard the church bells during the weekends. I will always wonder, is someone getting married? I've never been to a church wedding before. So if any of you guys getting married in a church, invite me lah!!

I then dropped by a clothings store, Edgars. They have price reduction on those very big sizes and very small sizes, good news for me!! There is this section that i like a lot. It has all the petite size. The sizes are XS or Size 6, and the length of the pants are for shorter people like me =). I actually spent RM100+ on clothes today, a large of it spent on the black pants that i think is very essential on my wardrobe, especially in this cold season. I cannot wear my favourite black skirt or anything above the ankle, it's too cold to walk to the office not covering my legs!

I bought a black pants, three tops, and a pair of socks! :o
The pants fit me nicely, no need for any alterations, so happy =)

This brownish top, i like it cos it looks feminine yet not slutty, as the cut is not very low with the black piece of cloth inside. I can even wear this to work. Hmm.. actually all the tops i bought are suitable for work, cos at home i just wear my favourite comfy but ugly T-shirts hehe.

Please ignore the messy bed. Next one is a black top with little polka dots. Polka dots are not my favourite, but they kinda look cute on this.

And the last one is just a small sweater to pullover when my arms feel cold.

Ugh, sorry.. not that good taking own pictures.. But i will be more pro after 6 months i'm sure.

.::: Discoveries :::. Saturday, September 13, 2008

When i say the skies in Stellenbosch is clear, that is what i meant. Clear.
Clear blue skies, without a cloud in sight.

The trees that were once bare in the winter, growing back leaves ready for Spring.
Today we have a sunny Saturday again - last few days have been the rainy days , gloomy.
Today the sun seems to shine on me and say "Hey , go out and do some shopping!" . And so i did =)

On my last post, i said that there is a street which i never go to before. Actually there are a few streets with very interesting shops which i just found out today.

There is this shop which sells handicraft. See the penguins, cows and little peacocks made out of beads.

While this shop is full of little but delicate items for sale.

The first thing that came to my mind is "My mum and sisters will love this shop!". Many things i feel like buying back as souvenirs, but i didn't want to decide that fast yet. This is only the second week, hey! I may see more choices later. But i think as usual, i will probably rush to buy souvenirs at the very last minute haha.

I actually went in many shops, but it is not that convenient to take photos in the shop, although i would really really like to share it with you all what i saw. The two pictures taken in the shops are also taken when nobody is looking =P

I also went to some tour shops, to find out more of the places that i hope i have the chance to visit. I really should learn some cycling. Cycling in Stellenbosch will be so fun. I think, i will probably borrow a bicycle from the company (Yes, they do have some bicycles for staff use ) and learn them ... Secretly. >.<

I also found a pet-grooming shop, where i talked to this nice lady about Rainbow and her dog. Miss the grooming sessions with her, miss my little princess.

Oops, I couldn't resist to take the picture of this beautiful mountain.

I actually walked pretty far out today, but Stellenbosch is such a pretty safe town. I don't know about at night (Because i have never been out at night!) , but the mornings and afternoons are very safe.

I bought a phone for R300 (around RM135). I will need this phone to put my Maxis card in it, because my old phone - W910i i will need it to put my SA sim card and act as a modem for me for me to surf 3G internet. Also, the SA sim card will be postpaid and the reason i buy it is so that i can go online at home.
I will prefer for you guys to call / message to my SA number, so that it will not be charged to both parties.

Nokia 1200: Kinda not that bad la... i mean, i did ask for "Which is the cheapest phone you got here? Can phone and message?"

I also went to a different pharmacy today, not to the usual Clicks. This pharmacy is called Alpha.
It is more pharmacy-looking, with more medicines and health items.
I bought a sugar-free sweet and a bottle of honey. I have always love honey drinks, just that they are so expensive in Malaysia.

I am not sure when, but i think i have eaten before this sweets. This is Kiwi-flavoured. I have seen before the shapes of this, but i forgot when is it that i last have them. Anyone would want to remind me?

After walking around, i went back to Eikestad Mall to have my favourite Yoghurt Drink from Mandels and my usual order of Kong Po Chicken with Rice.
I then dropped by the Post Office and bought some South African stamps.

The pictures are not so clear, but i have those of Mandela's 90th Birthday, some ships and some birds.
There are also this set of flowers - which has the flower scent on the stamps.

I had such a nice walk today, i will go and have my walk again next week. Tomorrow hmm maybe, because some shops close on Sundays or only open until 1pm.
I was in such a good mood, that i even put on some mud mask. Let you see the scary pic and yeah, that's my St Xavier's PE shirt. They are sooo comfy to wear them to sleep!

yeah. learn how to ride a bicycle. me also sad i dunno how to ride one.

u brought ur facemask from msia?

By Blogger Tan Shu-Yin, at September 14, 2008 10:21 AM

hahha... i try to be not that scary ... but without the mask already scary lah! haha
yin : nope, bought from here... the mask really smells of mud.. got the sea smell.... quite good also haha..
anyway, do u still want to come? if 4k airticket + 1k tour for two weeks ... if more ppl maybe cheaper gua .. but still expensive lah.. but after u hear the places u go, sounds so worth it! nex time give u the names, u can google it

I brought these from home to work, for my breakfast.

Looks big, but it's actually only this small.
Compare the box to my hand, see ? It's actually from those 6-in-a-pack cereals.
Thought of trying all the different flavours after i bought a very yucky 'cornflakes'.

On the other note, during lunchtime, i went to Sara's house . Sara is the only Malaysian , and the only person in BATSA that is not a South African (excluding those that only come here a few weeks for meetings or so). She is actually a contractor, not a permanent staff.
The place she is staying in Stellenbosch is so much nicer!

The place is a bit smaller than mine, but the furnishings... wow!
It looks like a high class service apartment.
And her place got air-cond! Mine don't have... dunno how hot is it during summertime.

Unfortunately, she is going to leave soon, which leaves me alone here.
Feel like getting a car and drive around to see the places a bit further from Stellenbosch.
But Sara doesn't want to waste money following as she has been to those places before :( and it's kinda dangerous to drive alone.
Hope when mum/dad decides to visit, i can have the chance to tour around, before i leave here.

Oh, tomorrow i will walk around the shops near Sara's place. Didn't realise that there are so many shops hidden there. Will take some photos then!

.::: KFC :::. Thursday, September 11, 2008

It's a sunny day. Beautiful skies.
Got these photos from the office window.

Guess what i eat for dinner today?
Kay... Eff... See

Their sets and packagings are different from the ones in Malaysia, and they only have original!
Don't have my favourite hot and spicy...

I bought this burger set for R30.90. Which is about RM14.

I'm not sure if anyone noticed this... While i was still in KL, i realised that KFC is not Kentucky Fried Chicken anymore, it became Kitchen's Fried Chicken.
Can you people check and see if it's Kentucky or Kitchen Fried Chicken?

scribbled @11:42 PM

It;s only KFC la wen..

they banned the word FRIED..cos its unhealthy....so now everything is KFC around the world.

By Blogger min, at September 12, 2008 12:37 PM

i agreed that it's only KFC. no longer has a long name for it. but i tot they banned the word KFC because it's not considered as chicken? because the "chickens" are featherless.?

By Blogger Shu-Min, at September 12, 2008 11:59 PM

To the two mins who answered : haha....

Wooimin : yea meh.. then poor Mr.Kentucky who made the chicken famous lah... But how come i see from the cups / boxes written Kitchen FRIED Chicken?

Min : Oii....Chicken to eat of course featherless lah.. u know of any dish with feathered chicken meh... haha

By Blogger shu-wen, at September 13, 2008 1:14 AM

i mean they are born featherless la!! that's why they are not qualified to be called chickens anymore. thus, no more Kentucky Fried Chicken but only KFC!

By Blogger Shu-Min, at September 13, 2008 6:28 PM

hahahah..... when a baby is born without hair, is he/she qualified to be called "human"? blek..

.::: No to Smoking? :::. Wednesday, September 10, 2008

Although BAT is a tobacco company, it does not encourage non smokers to smoke, but more to marketing the products to those who already choose to smoke.
This happens when you got nothing to do in the office toilet. Capturing photos.

The poster on the toilet wall ; which is so try

Condoms in the toilet - for emergency, maybe ?
I guess it's to promote safe sex as South Africa has a high rate of HIV cases.

Reminder to the staff on where they can/cannot smoke.

Me (Haih, no hometown friends there .. have to take all those self-taken pics =.=, just to prove that i have visited the toilet here, k =D )

In all the corridors in the office, you can see these posters - Note the words written on them.

.::: Rain Rain go Away :::. Monday, September 08, 2008

Woke up at 5am, the big wind outside is making too much noise.
I was thinking, shit.... i will have to walk to the office later. If there is heavystorm outside + big big wind (those that can blow your umbrella away), will it be dangerous to walk ??
But i have a meeting with my line manager at 9.30am !
Rain pouring heavily outside, until i cannot stand it already.. I went to the toilet to take some earplugs (the ones that MAS gave).
I have never wear an earplug before... haha.. but i plugged it into my ears, and forced myself to sleep.

Alarm rings at 7.15am... Snooze.
7.24am. Snooze.
7.33am. Snooze.
at 7.42am, i dragged myself off the bed.
Peering out of the window, it is still raining. But not as heavy now, drizzling only.

Haih, I am very suey.
Today is my first day walking to the office, and it is raining.
Luckily i brought my umbrella with me, so got to walk in the rain, hoping madly that it won't be that cold.

It is not as bad as it appears to be - it is raining all right, but it's not very very cold.
And i am lucky that i have my umbrella.

Had my talk with my Line Manager, a very nice guy, on the expectations and tasks as a BTA.
And he says the reason i'm in the BTA programme is to Learn, and get paid at the same time =)
Also, i asked him how long am i to stay in SA, he said for the next 6 months. Meaning i will be going back on February. (I was hoping it to be January, in time for Chinese New Year).
He reminded me that i will have a flight back in between the 6 months, and he *hint hint* to me that it's very quiet here during the Christmas season and that might be a good time for me to go back.
My mind thinking - Should i go back during Christmas? Or Chinese New Year?? How many days leave should i take?

I am actually looking forward on the places that i can visit with my parents at South Africa - Western Cape area.
I have googled around and there are so many options but the places are quite far from each other - South Africa is very big.
The things i have in list - Table Mountain , Cape Town, Garden Route, Penguins, Whales, Sharks.. Now just have to find the costs.

Do tell me if you heard of anywhere that is a must-visit here, with good prices.

.::: Sunny Saturday :::. Saturday, September 06, 2008

Saturday again. I know starting next week i will have work piling on me.
I want to get a nice pair of black pants today, so i walked out of my comfy house.
It was a hot day, sun shining brightly. Regret i am wearing so thick, i can even see some teenage girls wearing singlets. =.=
Anyway, many leng lui ang mohs here... mostly the University students i think *wink wink*

I also managed to snap some pictures today, snappings of buildings mostly.

Stellenbosch is the second oldest town in South Africa , hence the beautiful architectural buildings. Stellenbosch is also one of the best preserved towns from the founding days of the Cape Colony.

As i walk along the street of my house..

The rows of shops:

Even banks can look so pretty. I think the most common ATM machine banks to be found in Stellenbosch will be ABSA.

Erste Nasionale Bank:

Rows of shops again. See the beautiful architectural building:

I went to Clicks, a famous pharmacy around here. Something like the big Guardian in KL.
Saw this hot gloves, hot socks and hot thermal thing that you can wear if you feel cold. I can just imagine the feeling of wearing it, especially the gloves! I have very cold hands. Or rather, as Jen says, i am a reptilia! My body follows the temperature. Very cold when i feel cold. Very hot when i feel hot.

And i am so tempted to buy this!! Just to make my bath bubbly and fun! I didn't get it at last, didn't wanna waste on the unnecessaries =P

In the Eikestad Mall, the ABSA's ATM Machines:

I realised that the odd job workers here such as cashiers, the sweeping guy, the garbage collector, all are mostly blacks.
While the whites will be at the higher end shops, ordering hot chocolate, buying clothes, drinking coffee.

Oh ya , i found out the famous 'coffee shop''s name , Mugg & Bean ! Will come here if i feel rich =)

After going through some of the clothes - they are not very cheap but not too expnsive either. The quality of the cloths they use is very very good. Like those stretchy Nike type. About RM70-100. Normal branded clothes, although there i don't know what brand is branded. I just browsed around haha. Looking for size 6-8.
Did not manage to buy any at last, although i saw one top for RM60-70.... but my main thing that i want to buy is a pair of black pants! They only have those skinny skinny pants - maybe that is in fashion right now.
I walked to Checkers to get some groceries again. On the way , the big beautiful empty lawn space.

The potatoes at Checkers - scrubbed clean!

STRAWBERRIES!! Big and sweet ones! (Yeah i know it's sweet cos they give samples!)
And the best is - Only R9.99! That's about RM4.50 haha.
I didn't buy them, don't like strawberries =P

The famous Walls in Malaysia is called Ola in South Africa.

The makeshift stalls outside Checkers, where they sell handicrafts and such.

On my way back home, managed to snap some beautiful sceneries and buildings again.
Pictures of leaves starting to grow - ready for Spring.

The church:

Buildings nearer to my home:

See these fairytale buildings - i didn't lie to you when i say the buildings here are just . Spectacular.

Back home ; The main house of Victoriahof

At home, i hurriedly take off my jacket and open the window. >.< Next time i promise i will check the weather outside before deciding on what to wear. I cooked the fish fillet i bought , with some rice and soup.

While cooking, i left my bath tub water running, so that i can have a nice long bath after i finished cooking. Unfortunately, i didn't realise that the bath tub is dumb =.= there isn't a hole for the water to drain away in case it overflows...
The water actually overflow to my bathroom floor!

The soaked towel on the floor :

Scary but pretty bug on the towel:

Been talking to lao gong on the msn and even Skype a while, but didn't manage to talk to Mum.
If you all would like me to online, just give me a miss call on my new SA mobile number (you can get it from me), and i will get online. If i miss call you back, means I am out. If not, see u at msn =)

.::: Town of Stellenbosch :::. Friday, September 05, 2008

There is a bird keep cawing away every morning by my window, to remind me that i am here at Stellenbosch.
I don't like to wake up, to know that I am alone.
I love to see Rainbow wagging her tail, knowing that i woke up. She always do that, without fail.
It's nice to know someone is happy to know you are awake =)

I let the pictures do the talking for me , what it is like in the town of Stellenbosch.

The scenery outside my front door:

The street outside my house :

Nearing the centre of town ; on the way to Checkers / Shoprite / BATSA

The big lawn near BATSA:

Outside Checkers - The place to drink coffee.... the people there like coffee.

Took this during lunch time on the way out from BATSA's side door.

Don't worry guys, i will have more chance to snap more pictures of the beautiful buildings too. Because starting tomorrow, i will have to walk to and from work! No more drivers in Merc for me :(

Lastly, a pic of me. Mum, i'm doing good. But it will be much nicer if you all are here!!

.::: Food @ Stellenbosch :::. Thursday, September 04, 2008

The food in Stellenbosch is generally more expensive than in KL.
One meal will cost me about R20-30, which is about RM10-RM15, excluding drinks.
In the cafeteria, the price is determind by the weight of the food, which I do not like because i like my food with soup and it tends to make it heavier.
Furthermore, their food is very ang moh.... i prefer Asian food, home cooked food =)

Last weekend, i did a little bit of shopping , to cook ABC soup at home.
I love ABC soup, and it made me feel at home! =)
I went to Shoprite first, i walked around... and noticed the very long queue behind the c
ounter. Shoprite is inside Eikestad Mall, where the people here buy groceries. It is something
like Carrefour or Tesco.

The blacks come here more and they are supposed to be cheaper, but i have been told the owner of Shoprite and Checkers is the same person, t they have more variety at Checkers, it is not that packed at Checkers, and more whites go there.

So, i went to Checkers to do some groceries-shopping.

Do we have this Coke in Malaysia? I didnt really notice it, because i hate Cokes.

Then i saw something familiar! Milo! They don't have those really big tins like the ones back in Malaysia, they are not so popular over here. So they only have these really small tins.

Their eggs are packed in sets of 6. Either that, or you buy the 24 pieces set. Maybe i can find more variety of it after this week's shopping.

I didnt take too many pictures inside, kind of look stupid to be snapping everything away.. especially if you are alone.

This is what i bought :

Kellogg's Cereal - a big mistake, tastes awful

Chicken, tomatoes, carrots, potatoes, onions - for my ABC Soup

Rice

Bread

Nuttella - Tasted a bit different...

Milo - Not like our normal Milo.. this tastes like Chocolate Powder

Eggs

My ABC soup boiling happily away:

As i do not have a rice cooker over here, i have to use the microwave to cook my rice! Keng or not... the people here tell me rice cooker easier than using the pot.

Anyway they have a lot of rice to choose from, not like ours - either Beras Wangi or Tempatan..

They have Tasmati Rice, and err forgot what else.

I bought the one that i think looks closer like the ones at home. And a Chinese lady outside the package with chopsticks. It's still a long grain rice, but it's not as fluffy as the ones at home. Either that or i didn't cook it right.

Cooking rice from the microwave:

It was a yummy weekend for me. I love ABC soup~~~ I LOVE ABC SOUP~~ I LOVEEEE ABC SOUP~~

Oh ya, yesterday i found one asian restaurant/shop cooking Asian food.

It is called Magic Flavour. I ordered the Kong Po Chicken and it tasted heavenly. Got to know them more and ask them where they buy their sauces and stuffs. (Because i bought one Light Soya Sauce cos i am kiam po hehe but it tastes like shit :( duno wat to do with it now ! )
The delicious kong po chicken:
I also love to buy Yoghurt Shakes from Marcel's. Costs R12.90. But it makes me happy drinking it while enjoying the cold wind blowing my face.

.::: Home in Stellenbosch :::. Wednesday, September 03, 2008

A visit to my home in Stellenbosch.

It's a lovely two-room apartment, with kitchen, DSTV (Atro-like), long bath.

It is at Van Riebeeck Street , about 10mins walk away from BATSA.
Stellenbosch is mainly a university town. Full of students, so it is normal to see people walking in the street to their university.
So far i can say that, Stellenbosch is a pretty and safe town. Unlike other places in South Africa that i heard. Nevertheless, one can never be too safe, even in KL.

The living room

The kitchen ; complete with cooking utensils, kettle, microwave, fridge, even an oven!

The door on the left is the main door, and this is the short hallway leading to the bedrooms and toilet.

My room; the room i sleep in. Many layers of blanket - thank God! And also many pillows!

Got hairdryer also! Luckily i didnt bring mine =)

The toilet; complete with long bath. But i don't have Mummy's bath salt =(

The extra room which i use it to iron clothes , etc. Near the window is the emergency light... in case no electricity (Which happened to whole of Stellenbosch before), the light will be on.

I hope it won't happen.. i will be really scared.

And lastly,

me before going to work!
