.::: Wa, featured blog of the week? :::. Friday, December 19, 2008

Am most honoured! To be featured in this travel site for South Africa ! Awesome!

Hi everyone, I'm back in M'sia for this week. It has been hectic, a week passes by too fast, 10 days to be exact.
Not to mention that it includes a 4 days 3 nights getaway to Langkawi in this short holiday here.
So do forgive me that i didn't go meet up with most of you :)

I just returned from Langkawi yesterday, but even after 8 days here, i think i still am experiencing the jet lag. Either that or I think i have a sleeping disorder ... It's 5.41am right now, and i'm still so much awake! HELP !!

And the @#!@%$@ part is that since now I'm so free with nothing else better to do, i thought of updating my blog with the photos in Langkawi. BUT:
My photos are in my camera's memory card.
Use memory card reader la!
I do not have a memory card reader here.
Then use cable lor!
Got cable, but my camera is out of battery. The camera needs to be on in order for the PC to detect.
Charge your camera lah, duh!
Brought camera back to M'sia, forgot about the charger :(
Go die.
OK!

The end.

.::: Rhode's Memorial, Signal Hill :::. Sunday, November 23, 2008

On the way to Signal Hill, we stopped by Rhode's Memorial.
Sir Cecil John Rhodes is one of the most dazzling personalities of South African history. He was born in 1853 in England and came to South Africa at the age of 17. When the diamond rush started in the north of the Cape country, he bought some diamond-rich claims and amassed a fortune in a very short amount time.
From then on Cecil Rhodes used his financial power mainly for political influence. In 1890, he became Prime Minister of the Cape Colony and his time in office marks the height of British influence in politics in the Cape. The colony was forcefully extended towards the north and the west. It was Rhodes' aim in life to bring the two Boer Republics, the Orange Free State and the South African Republic in Transvaal (proclaimed between 1854 and 1856) under British control. For this reason he attempted a putsch, which failed and forced him to resign before the end of his term.
Sir Cecil Rhodes died in 1902. The memorial above the University of Cape Town (UCT) offers a splendid view of the city.

Sir Cecil Rhodes :

It was built with granite extracted from Table Mountain and reflects the obsession of this power-hungry politician.

See the view behind me? You can see a whole lot of Cape Town from here.

We then continue driving to Signal Hill. We wanted to get there to view the sunset.
When we arrived, the parking place was very full. Some people are already there picnic-ing, choosing the nicest spot they can to view the sunset.
We then also spread our small mat, and enjoy the breathtaking view of sunset in Cape Town.
It's weird but the sun here is bigger and rounder than in Malaysia.
And the view of their open wide sea always amazed me.

Can even see Robben Island from here :

The sun sets..

City lights in Cape Town when it's dark..

I love Cape Town ! !

.::: Stellenbosch Wine Estates :::. Sunday, November 16, 2008

One weekend, we borrowed a car and both me and Sara drove around Stellenbosch, in search of a wine estate to do some wine tasting.
Unfortunately it was a Sunday, and all wine estates closes at 4pm.
We chose to instead enjoy the scenery of the wine estates and took some photos.

Firstly we went to Neethlingshof.
Driving up the imposing stone pine avenue, unfolds Cape Dutch buildings with a beautiful garden.

The pine trees lining up ...

After that we went to Asara.
Asara - The name Asara is derived from the names of the African gods of Earth, Sun and Sky – Astar, Asis & Asase.

Wine tasting is also closed, so we just sat there and chill while eating some food. I got myself a Savana Dry instead - don't really like wines. We spent some time there beside a large lake with geese.

There are plenty of wine estates in Stellenbosch, and it's so cheap! You can have wine tasting - 4 to 6 wines for only R25.

.::: Hermanus Weekend :::. Friday, November 14, 2008

Two weekends ago, we went to the other side of Western Cape, all along the way to Hermanus.
We first ate at Mooiberge, a farmstall where everyone who drives pass it will be greeted by a lot of scarecrows, scary for crows, cute for human :)
You can also pick strawberrys at the farm - i didn't pick because i don't eat strawberries. We just spent some time there to have our brunch and took some pictures.

After our lovely brunch of mushroom chicken burgers, we stopped by at Strand.
The beach is big and looks endless. The waves are big enough for surfing.
But ahhhh , the water is cold! I'm used to warm water in Malaysia :(
But the water is definitely a lot cleaner.
Imagine further away there are whales and sharks and seals. Cool.
In Malaysia i can only imagine there will be plastic bags, paper cups, mud, >.< onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Y8p1NVtall0/SRxwY0tvo0I/AAAAAAAAA9o/1Gwm9lROpzU/s1600-h/tn_IMG_0138.JPG">

Lovely seagulls everywhere in near the beach, they look so nice and free.

We then made our way to Hermanus, but the scenic drive along the way is breathtaking..

In Hermanus... to see the whales!! I didn't go for the boat ride though. According to Zen, during the boatride there will be lots of whales swimming around your boat! I will definitely go for the boatride when my parents are here :)

Whale's tail from far away.. see the black speck? Very exciting when u can see the water go PSSHHHHHHT out !

The lovely shops at Hermanus which allow you to look at the whales while drinking a cup of hot cocoa.

After spending some time at Hermanus, Ian took us for a ride along the coast. We passed by Betty's Bay, Sir Lowre's Pass, Gordon's Bay, and many other bays. Lol.
As the time when we got home is during sunset... it was super super beautiful!

At Gordon's Bay, while trying to find a toilet, we stumbled upon a big, big, big, 2nd hand book store. The books there range from really old books /magazines (Mandy for Girls, Reader's Digest in those old old thick cover type) to new Harry Potter books. And the best thing is - they are really cheap. Harry Potter books , original ones ; selling for R50 or so.
And they books (old hardcover types) are in so nice condition. I was really tempted to buy them but i know it will be very heavy for me to carry them home. If they are in Malaysia, i would have buy a big book cupboard just to store all those books. This is a must visit for Mummy :p

The pictures is not doing any justice to the size of this place, but i took a video of it. Lazy to upload the video here, takes too long .

Hmm. The next trip i will buy at least a few books - i dont care! :P

That's a nice and neat bookstore. Definately have more books than the 2nd Hand Book Store at our Chowraster Market. We went there only last Sat. Most of the novals are selling at rm15-18 per book. New ones are selling at rm35 per book.
Great sceneries, hope u will be taking me to these places when i am there. Noticed u are no longer wearing ur winter jackets Must be getting warm (hot) now.

Love you, mummy

.::: Back !! - Green Green Grass :::. Wednesday, November 12, 2008

I have not been updating this blog for ages.
I have also been busy touring around Cape Town, been to Strand, Hermanus, Signal Hill, all over!
And thanks to lao gong, i have my camera to capture all the beautiful pictures here :)

Sara came back to Stellenbosch from her Raya holidays back in KL about 2 weeks ago, with the camera gift from Jen.
She also bought a new camera for herself. So we went to this small garden near our office after work, and camwhore.
The thing is, in SA, it is very common just to lie down on the grass, unlike if in KL, i will be worried if there is cow dung or worms @.@
Okay.. there might be also worms here, but somehow its much cleaner and no weird smell coming from the grass.

Even this small mini park next to the court house can be so lovely~

First thing came to my mind.. should i post about this?
Then i thought, ahh.. i would like to remember next time in my life about this 'experience'.
Hahaha..
So what is it?

Well....

I pooped green shit :(
Really Green!!!! Ahhhhhhhh, no kidding wei.

I feel like a spinach now =.=

I started to think - what did i eat the day before? I only ate pasta, nothing green!
So how to find out the cause? Google, of course.

I found this amazing site, all about poop. Cool!
It explains why our poop is brown, why our poop stinks, why is bird poop white, and interestingly ,

Do most people wipe their left-over poop standing up or while sitting on the pot, and are there gender differences?

How does poop stay together, like in links?

Why does some poop float?

Hahahaha...

Check it out at Smellypoop

and NO, I DID NOT TAKE ANYTHING GREEN THE DAY BEFORE!

.::: First time at the Gym :::. Thursday, October 23, 2008

Guess what?
I registered myself at the gym - for one month.
I actually never been to a gym before, not even when I am in Malaysia.
I thought, i should be spending my free time being healthy - pressured by the South African people here. Every morning and evening, you can see young and old people jogging. Most of the young people exercise to great look in bikinis during the summer. Haha..

So yesterday I registered myself at the University of Stellenbosch's Gym, walking distance away. It is around R250 (About RM120) for one month. It actually cost only R350 for two months and gradually less and less if you take more months. But since i won't be in SA for most of the days in December, i only took the one month package.

So yesterday for the first time in my life, i spent 1 hour at the gym! Doing the cycling and running machines. But i think the next time i will probably join the classes for yoga, aerobics and steps. Sounds more fun.
It's not like i want to slim down by going to the gym. I think the reason i want to the gym is tone up and actually enjoy and have fun.

But i do feel a bit weird being the only chinese in the gym. Most of the members there are the white students from the University.

Hmm.. tomorrow they are having yoga classes at 6-7pm. Should i? =)

.::: Lekoa Lodge & Factory Tour - Johannesberg :::. Wednesday, October 15, 2008

Hello!
I'm back in Stellenbosch.
Time passed by fast, new things to see, new things to learn everyday.

The driver came to fetch me at 12.15pm sharp and we chatted all along the way to the Cape Town International Airport. The drivers are all very friendly people and great guys.

I found Leonie and Reggie at the airport and we took the British Airways for our flight to Jo'berg.
I'd gotten myself a window seat. Nice, i like to be able to see the views from my window, and also to lean on the window when i need to sleep =P

Clear blue skies at Cape Town.

Nearing Jo'berg.

It was a short flight, we reached Jo'berg at about 1 1/2 hours later. We had 6 of us in our flight, so we rented a car (Big, luxury car / van..don't ask me the model, i dunno) from Avis.

Once outside, we were greeted by the scorching hot sun.

I really felt like I'm back in Malaysia. haha... It has been long since it has been so hot!
Reggie took control of the wheel to take us to Lekoa Lodge, where they will have their Manager's Meeting and stayovers, and me having another meeting with the suppliers.
The drive was neverending, and from our windows, i see this!

And this!

What is there to see?
Right.. Nothing.
The place is bare... Apparently, there is no rain during the wintertime, therefore all the crops dried up. They only have rain during the summertime.
During the journey, i see sheep, springboks and cows eating the grass.

Reggie joked, pointing to the cows and said, "Shu-Wen, this is our dogs in South Africa."
So I replied, "Wow, that is just the size of the rats from Malaysia."
Lol, we laughed like mad.

On our way, we passed by the BAT Factory in Heidelberg. We even lost our way, stopped by to ask the police car at the side of the road, and got escorted by the police van ! Everyone by the roadside looked at us, thinking we are VVVIP i think. Haha

After 80km from Heidelberg, we reached our destination. The Lekoa Lodge.

It's like heaven after you drove and looked at miles and miles of dry land. Here, it's like an oasis. Green green grass, luxury cottages, swimming pool, wow!

My cottage is also amazing, it is actually very cooling, compared to the heat outside.

The restaurant / bar where we hang out during the two evenings, with loads and loads of drinks. Brandy, wines, shots, canned drinks, beer. You name it, they have it.

They also sell biltongs.
Biltongs is a kind of cured meat that originated from South Africa, similar to beef jerkys in the US. Many different types of meat can be used to make it, ranging from beef to fillets of ostrich from commercial farms. It is typically made from raw fillets of meat cut into strips.
I tasted it, but i didn't like it. For one, it is too hard for me to bite with my braces. Secondly, it is almost tasteless.

This type is easier to bite, but still tasteless :

We had a game drive after the meetings, and although there are not many animals as in safaris or in the national parks, I got to see springboks and also zebras! This is the first time i see zebras, outside from the zoo.
We got into this big tank van for our game ride :

They also took us to the hunters home and there are a lot of displays of the animals they managed to hunt. I don't like the place, pity the animals ar!!

In the evenings, we just chilled and drank from the bar. I started light, with a Brutal Fruit which is a mild alcoholic drink, a cidar with a taste of Lychee. It is like a fruit juice with a little bit of alcohol.

Then i had a Savanna, which is a light, dry but cool cidar.

At the last evening i also had two shots of Blow Jobs, which I didn't know it is called that until that day. Haha.. Leonie asked me, "Would you like a blow job?"
Me, thinking of the 'blow job' said "No?"
And she said, "Don't worry, this blow job doesn't involve men."
Lol. So i tried.

The Blow Job shots are actually made of Bailey's Irish cream, amaretto almond liquor or some kahlua. Then it is topped with whipped cream.
The lady at the bar made us the shots.

It tastes really nice and sweet, but Leonie warned me that you can't take too many shots at once because it tastes so sweet, you will get drunk before you notice it.

They also introduced me Long Drop. They said it is also known as Toilet shots =.=. Why toilet? Cos it looks like toilet. Haha..

It looks more like an internal organ, eh? It also tastes sweet, but much stronger than the Blow Jobs. I actually prefer both of them compared to cidars / beers.

Then Kashif and William also taught me to shoot some pool.

It was quite fun, but quite tiring also. My hands very boh lat wan, will need to do more exercise >.<. Di, i play pool with you when i'm back? =)

We had a great time at Lekoa Lodge and I am thankful for William to take me there!

Our visit to the factory the next day is also a learning experience for me. I never knew that the stems are also used for ciggerates and the matelliser are imported from Switzerland!
After looking at the process of how ciggerates in BAT are made, i can assure all of you smokers of BAT products, the ciggs that you are smoking is not easy to make. It goes through a lot a lot of process and checks to ensure the best of quality.

.::: To Johannesberg :::. Sunday, October 12, 2008

I'll be flying to Johannesberg for a meeting.
The flight is today, and I'll be staying over until Tuesday.
I'm glad i will be able to visit the factory in Heidelberg and get to tour it!
Just finished packing my small luggage (I sure hope it looks small).

Luggage bag courtesy from Lily.

Yesterday i went over the the Checker's second hand book stall to buy books again. Five great books of Sidney Sheldon (The Other Side of Me, The Doomsday Conspiracy, Morning Noon & Night and Nothing Lasts Forever)

All for R100 rand, which is less than RM50. Very very worth it considering the condition of book (looks brand new) and one of it is hard cover!

I also went to Simply Asia again, this time alone >.< . Ate this lovely seafood curry with rice. R65 (around RM30)

Ok... I'll have to have a quick breakfast before my transport comes to fetch me to the airport.
Next post, from Johannesberg if i can get into the internet!

.::: Destination 1 : Canal Walk and Table Mountain :::. Saturday, October 11, 2008

Last week, we ( Vincent, Zen, Suet and me) rented a car from Avis. We chose a Group D car and it turns out to be a Mercedes Polo Classic, Automatic, with Power Steering and air-cond.
One day rental for around R330 - Unlimited km.

It is really a very nice, new (or looks new) and comfy car (although I am not the one who drives) but from the look on Vincent's face, i would say it is .

Our first stop was to the Cape Town International Airport. No, no one is catching any flight, we just had to get our GPS System, which proved very handy throughout the entire journey.
After adding our day destinations into the Gamin's GPS System, we started our journey to.. Canal Walk first. Because apparently Zen and Suet has left some items on Tjun's car yesterday night. >.< Canal Walk Shopping Centre is build around a series of canal. Duh.
It is one of the largest shopping centre in Africa, boasting more than 400 stores, stores, cinemas and game centres.

We stopped there for about 1 hour, just to grab some food at Steers and also snapping some photos.

Our journey then continued, the next stop at Table Mountain.
Just halfway driving up, we could not resist stopping our car just to take the amazing view of Cape Town. We have not even reached the entrance for the Cable Car up Table Mountain.

Just look at this :

Believe me, this picture didn't even do justice to what you will see for yourself.

At last we reached the Cable Car Entrance. But.... although it was a sunny day, the wind was too strong, and the Cable Car was closed. Such a pity. Imagine what would the view from the top of Table Mountain when even from here the view is already spectacular.

The Hop On Hop Off Bus with a bus full load of people disappointed.

The shops selling souvenirs are priced quite decently compared to Cape Point , and i was so tempted to buy a cute stuffed toy animal.

Table Mountain with its famous flat top.

Continue with next destination tomorrow. Shit - took me more than 20 mins to upload 5 pics =.=

Lovely blog posting, I'm so glad I came across it - great photos and story. I run a South African travel website, and we have chosen this posting as our blog of the week - have linked to it from our weekly newsletter (see City Lodge's new year discounts).

Keep up the great writing!

Not my fault, cos the photos are not with me :(

Speaking of photos..Can someone intro me a good camera, with model names?
1) Easy to use - Everything looks nice with Auto mode haha
2) Shutter is fast
3) Don't have to wait a long time before i get to snap the next picture
4) Less or around RM1200 ? Not too expensive please.
5) Not TOO bulky
6) Battery is good
7) Works well at night
Lots of suggestions with explanation needed, Urgent!

By Blogger mimiteekay, at October 06, 2008 4:11 PM

hey now like yin's but higher pixel and a little more function is only rm799 during promotion. with free memory card at least 1-2gb some more. model is Canon Ixus 70 (for 7mega pixel).

if want extra lithium battery, Original Canon is about rm200, compatible (AP) i think rm80.

feedback from yin - lithium battery cannot last very long. need to buy extra.

By Blogger Shu-Min, at October 06, 2008 7:57 PM

i'm a canon ixus user, but i'll definitely recommend Panasonic Lumix. One of the best in the market....

.::: Growing Fat @ Stellenbosch :::. Thursday, October 02, 2008

What do you do with fellow Malaysians in another country?

Searching for Asian Food, of course!

Today together with Vincent and Zen, we went to Simply Asian Thai Food Restaurant.
They will be in Stellenbosch for a project for two weeks.
Such a nice feeling to have people with the same taste bud as I didn't get much chance to eat together with Sara as she is fasting during the Puasa month.

The food in Simply Asia is really very tasty. Remember the green curry i ate last two weeks ago? I ordered the same thing again. Haha... Don't ask me why, i can eat the same thing everyday once i like it. But today, it is not as spicy although i ordered for spicy hot.

Previously I had a butterfly carrot on my rice, today i only got 'lalang'. =(

Zen also ordered the green curry, while Vincent ordered Sate (must be missing Malaysia so much) and Seafood Tom Yam.
The Sate looks funny, because there is not a black speck of 'hangus' on the Sate at all. Sates are supposed to have a bit of burnt part here and there ma... See this westernised-Sate, basically a cooked meat on a stick.

The Seafood Tom Yam is quite tasty, with very strong coconut milk flavour.

Looks yummy eh?

Me and Zen on the way walking back to office, outside Oom Samie Se Winkel at Dorp Street.

Next I will tell you what i had for dinner. Haha.. (Sorry la, since today is a weekday, the highlight of the day is of course the eating part; Lunch and Dinner)

After work, as they both are interested to know where i sleep, we went over to my humble home to show them where i stay. Then I went over to their house to 'chi chan' (free food! =))
Vincent said that he will be cooking, so me and Zen, two lucky ladies got to sit and enjoy the food.

Chef with the ingredients.. So systematic =.=
(Out of topic : When i see the word 'systematic' , i will always think of my Daddy).

The chef at work... Girls sit beside, waiting for food and snapping pictures.. haha

Ching Chang Qing Qang Wa Chaaaaa !
Sap sap sui.. food is ready.

Fluffy white rice... Imported from Malaysia.

I love love love love to this dish! Back in Malaysia, I always order this potatoes when i eat Chap Fun or tapau food back.

Meat with the western-type chilli (argh, lazy to think what is it called ) Ooops.. pic a bit blur

Green vege with carrot and meat

BURP! Very very full... So long never eat home-cooked food. Good idea, never thought of cooking that potato dish.. will cook that next time.

Ahhh Mummy, i want to eat Assam Prawn!
Ahhh Kuku, i want to eat Sambal Prawn!
Ahhh Dear, i want to eat Tom Yam!
Ahhh Old Town, i want to eat Chicken Hor Fun!

I miss the food back at home!!!!
